Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Released

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Windows Vista

Today, Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista to the public. I’ve already installed it, and there’s not much that is noticeably different, most of the changes are under the hood. I installed SP1 with no problems, and it seems to be working well. So far, the only thing I’ve noticed that is visually different is the Start Menu. But, the only difference is there is no longer a Search button, which makes the Start Menu just a little bit shorter. Here’s a comparison of the Start Menu on SP1 (left) and on RTM (right) (click for a larger view:

Service Pack 1 is currently available through Windows Update as an optional update, if it determines your computer is ready for it. Make sure to install any drivers or updates Windows Update wants you to install, and then SP1 will probably show up (you’ll have to click Check for Updates again). Alternatively, if SP1 isn’t showing up (and you’re sure you have everything required to install it) or you want to install it on multiple computer, it can be downloaded here. When installed from Windows Update, the download size will be smaller, because Windows Update will only download what’s necessary. Microsoft has said that SP1 will become an automatic update in about a month.

WordPress 2.3.3 Released

Monday, February 4th, 2008

WordPressWordPress 2.3.3 has been released! This minor release contains security and bug fixes, and it’s recommended you upgrade ASAP!

Just a note, when you upgrade, you may see this at the bottom of the WordPress admin panel (most likely it’ll be fixed quite soon):

You are using a development version (2.3.3). Cool! Please stay updated.

This is just a mistake, and this release is no longer a development version. No need to worry. :) It should be fixed now.

WordPress 2.3.2 Released, WordPress 2.4 Delayed

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

WordPressA couple of days ago, the WordPress team announced that WordPress 2.3.2 was released. This release contains security and bug fixes, so upgrade ASAP.

Download WordPress 2.3.2.

Also, Matt Mullenweg (founder of WordPress) just announced on the wp-hackers mailing list, that WordPress 2.4 would be delayed until early-March (it was previously set to be released on January 24, 2008), because of big changes happening throughout WordPress (new Admin panel, etc). They’ll also be skipping the version 2.4, and it’ll become WordPress 2.5. It’s definitely better to have a great release later, than a rushed release sooner!

WordPress 2.3.1 Released

Friday, October 26th, 2007

WordPressNot long after WordPress 2.3 was released, WordPress 2.3.1 has been released today! WordPress 2.3.1 includes bug and security fixes.

Also, if you use Windows Live Writer, 2.3.1 includes the necessary files to make tagging possible.

To see the full run-down of the changed things, check out WordPress’ Trac.

Well, at least we all know that the update notification works!

I’ve upgraded, have you? 😀

Switch Back to Technorati Incoming Links

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

When WordPress 2.3 was released, it introduced a change that, most likely, affected every Blogger using WordPress. Whether the change affected the Blogger in a good or bad way, it still happened.

That change I’m talking about is, of course, the Incoming Links section, of your WordPress Dashboard, beginning to use Google Blog Search, instead of Technorati, to get a list of the links. Using Google over Technorati does have it’s advantages. Google is faster and includes links not just from Blogs, but from all sites. However, if you’re a Blogger that’s obsessed with your rankings on all the rankings sites, you might want to see who’s linking to you through Technorati’s eyes, so that you can easily tell when your Technorati rank is improving.

So, for people who want to change the Incoming Links on their Dashboard back to using Technorati, I created a simple WordPress plugin. I called the plugin Technorati Incoming Links. When activated, the plugin will start using Technorati for the Incoming Links instead of Google. If you want to switch back to Google, just deactivate the plugin.

This WordPress plugin requires WordPress 2.3 or higher and is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3.

I hope you enjoy the Plugin! 😀 If you find anything wrong with it, let me know.
