Alexa Gets New Look

Sunday, May 13th, 2007

AlexaIt appears that Alexa has a brand new layout. It’s not a completely new layout, it was just given a few tweaks and colour adjustments. Also, what looks to be a new logo.

I have to say, it’s an improvement of what it used to be, but it could be better. It still has a few bugs too.

MyCardMaker Gets Rid of Free Cards

Friday, May 11th, 2007

MyCardMakerMyCardMaker, a printable Card generator, no longer offers Free Cards. As of Thursday, May 10, 2007, you must be a “premium member” to print your card. They used to offer a couple of free cards in each category, but now you have to become a premium member to print any of the Cards.

For a 1-day membership, it’s $3.99 USD. For a year, it’s $19.99 USD. For 2 years, it’s $29.99 USD.

I had actually received an email about this earlier in the week, but I thought it was SPAM, and I deleted it. The email didn’t look very professional at all, but apparently it was legit.

In the beginnings of the MyCardMaker service, you used to be able to upload your own image for the Card cover, or use one of the premade ones, now for free. They then made it so you had to be a premium member to use your own image, and made most of the premade Covers premium member only. Leaving only a few Covers free. MyCardMaker has never had advertisements on their Website.

I think making all the Free Cards paid is a bad idea. If anything they should’ve built up some more (not to mention better) free Cards. Then, just make even better paid Cards, so that if people want fancier Cards, they’ll pay for them.

MyCardMaker pretty much dominated the Free Printable Card Generator market. There was really no other good, professional, free printable card generators.

Maybe I should start up a Free Printable Card Generator site… 😛

Automattic/WordPress.Com Stats

Monday, May 7th, 2007

A plugin, for WordPress, has been released to harness the power of Automattic‘s Statistics’ “Engine” for non-WordPress.Com hosted Blogs. It’s called Automattic Stats.

This plugin is super simple to use, just upload it to /wp-content/plugins/, activate it and enter your WordPress.Com API Key.

Yes, you do need a WordPress.Com account, since you need an API key, but it’s still good.

It will then add a Menu under “Dashboard” and clicking it will send you to your WordPress.Com Dashboard, where you will be presented with your Blog’s Stats.

I’ve actually always been a fan of how Automattic displays their Statistics, and now I can see my own Blog’s Stats in the super-simple-to-read format. This will complement other Stats programs I use. Especially since these Stats are displayed as line graphs, much simpler to quickly read than Google Analytics. Google Analytics Stats are good too, and much more detailed, but Automattic Stats are more meant for a quick and easy way to see how your Blogs doing, I think. 😛 I still like Google Analytics, but you need a little bit more time to go through it. This plugin will be useful for when I want the quick-n-dirty stats.

At least now I’ll have a couple of different ways/places to see my Blog’s stats. I’ll also be able to compare the results between them, to reach a more accurate idea of Traffic and such.

PageRank Update

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

It appears that Google is doing a PageRank update. This tool says that on 23 of Google’s servers, I have a PageRank of 4. The rest of Google’s servers should be updated with the new PageRank in a couple of days, hopefully.

That’s a pretty big jump, from 0 to 4 in the 4 months I’ve had this Blog up and running. 😀

Maybe now that I’m getting a higher PageRank, I’ll get accepted into sites like Text Link Ads and ReviewMe.

BlueFur Phish Phinder

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

BlueFur Phish Phinder has been released! Phish Phinder is an Outlook Plugin to reveal the URL on Links in messages. So, all links have the URL of them in brackets to the right of them. So, the point of it is, is you received a legit looking email, you’d be able to quickly see if it’s a fake or it’s the real deal. Useful for all those fake Paypal emails going around.

Here’s a screenshot of what it would look like:

BlueFur Phish Phinder Screenshot

So, it would essentially look like this:

Go to Matt’s Blog (http://mattsblog.ca/)!

It also supports a Whitelist. So, you can go and edit a file and add email addresses you trust, so that emails from them won’t have the URLs beside the Links. One downside of the Plugin is that it can break the layout of emails/Newsletters, so the Whitelist is a great feature.

The Plugin works on Outlook 2000, 2003 and 2007 (I tested it in Beta stages with Outlook 2007 and Vista), and works on both POP3 and IMAP.

It’s also good to note that this will not apply to out going emails, it only applies when viewing your messages.

Phish Phinder will be free for everyone for 6 Months, and after that BlueFur will consider charging a nominal fee for non-BlueFur customers.

So, if you use Outlook, and you get a lot of SPAM (who doesn’t 😛 ), and you’re worried about Phishing, check out the Phish Phinder Plugin for Outlook.
